Helen's Story - Stopping Institutional Carelessness & Neglect

For Helen’s son and daughter, the nightmare began when their vital, active 79-year-old mother was hospitalized with a stroke, and only got worse when she was transferred to a rehab facility, where she came down with a near fatal infection due to staff carelessness and neglect.

On top of everything, Helen’s insurance company was refusing to pay for her care, and Helen did not qualify for Medicaid, despite having rapidly depleted her resources over the past 3 months.

Unable to resolve any of these issues no matter what they tried, the family contacted Health Advocacy Solutions. HAS became the family’s eyes and ears inside the facility: assessing Helen’s care, working with the staff to create an effective treatment plan, and nipping yet another infection in the bud. HAS also made sure Helen started to get the physical therapy she needed but hadn’t been receiving, and took on her insurance company and got them to agree to pay for Helen’s care.

“Living in another state, it was impossible for me to accomplish anything long distance,” explained her daughter Sarah. “And though my brother is only two hours away and was
there every weekend, it wasn’t enough. I truly believe that HAS is the only reason my mother
is still alive and the insurance company is living up to its obligations. We could never have made it happen on our own, and we don’t have the resources to hire an attorney or private medical advocate. As far as our family is concerned, HAS is the most wonderful organization
in the world.”
